Nashville, Tenn. – Baptist Sports Medicine is partnering with The Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee and Nashville Metro Parks to launch the youth fitness initiative, Commit to Get FitTM. The goal of this innovative program is to raise awareness of the importance of fitness and nutrition with area girls.
The 12-week program challenges participants and their parents to get healthy by incorporating smart lifestyle choices into their daily habits. Classes for the program, which began September 9th, will meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 4 PM at the East Park Community Center and continue through December.
“With the Commit to Get FitTM program, Baptist Sports Medicine is having a positive impact on the health and wellness of children in Middle Tennessee,” says Trent Nessler, DPT Managing Director of Baptist Sports Medicine. “We are honored to partner with the Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee, which will allow us to have a larger impact on Middle Tennessee while embracing the values engrained in this stellar organization,” he continues.
The program includes pre and post fitness assessments, a program guidebook, a FUNdamental Fitness book, walking pedometers and program, parental integration and after-school full-body exercise classes each week, as well as a fitness, nutrition and positive mental focus curriculum. Participating Girl Scouts who successfully complete the program will receive a unique fitness Girl Scouts badge.
“Girl Scouts is committed to promoting healthy living among our members,” says Megan Davis, Program Manager. “We strive to build girls of courage, character and confidence, who make the world a better place. By partnering with Baptist Sports Medicine, our participants will certainly gain self-confidence, and strengthen their bodies and minds at the same time.”
Cost to participate is $5 per session or participants can pay a month at a time in advance for $40. There is also a one-time Girl Scout membership fee of $10. Scholarships will be offered to qualifying participants through the State of Tennessee Project Diabetes grant.
Additional funding for the pilot program is provided by Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee, Nashville Metro Parks and by grants awarded to Baptist Sports Medicine by the Tennessee Department of Health.
